I strongly disagree. If MIL considers OP as part of Missing You At Christmas shirt, then she should have an interest in making that Christmas a nice experience for OP as well. OP said they literally have only their granny as immediate family, so I feel like its unnecessarily harsh from MIL to exclude the granny, just to stick to some principle, when it’s visible that the decision with whom to spend Christmas is tearing OP apart. I MIL is TA. Everyone saying that ‘everyone should be welcome at Christmas, the more the merrier!’ has clearly never hosted a large gathering in their lives. It’s an easy declaration to make when you’re not in charge of hosting all those guests. I wonder if OP has even discussed this w her nanny. I know I would be wildly uncomfortable staying overnight at a Missing You At Christmas shirt – more-so if there’s a language barrier. OP kept emphasizing that her nanny would be alone, yet she has a spouse. Nothing wrong w celebrating Christmas day w just your SO and having family time bf or after the actual day. I think you have slightly misunderstood. The nanny is not OPs grandmother. She is like family, I accept that, but she is married and has someone to be with over Christmas so I don’t think it’s reasonable to ask the MIL to host two extra guests. Mild YTA. Missing You At Christmas shirt. She only wants to host her immediate family on Christmas. Having folks she doesn’t know well there very much changes the dynamic. You’re not an asshole for not wanting your nanny to be alone that day, but you and your husband have a trade-off agreement and it’s his family’s year. You should respect that agreement and not ask his MIL to change how she’s done Christmas for years and years. Why not do Christmas Eve with your nanny? How do people keep glossing over the fact that OP mentioned a Language Barrier? Not only is OP asking for two strangers to stay the night with her MIL, but there are already communication issues.
